In South Australia a junior primary school, it is where a child will begin their education, usually in or before the year level preceding Year 1. Depending on the school, a child will move to the main primary school between the ages of 7 and 10.

In most primary schools, the junior primary is located within the same buildings and grounds as the primary school, although some junior schools are located on an adjacent or separate.

And In the United Kingdom a junior school is usually a small school serving a particular locality, and is also used by independent schools to refer to the nursery and primary school services they offer.

A junior school forms part of the local pattern of provision for primary education. Most junior schools cater for pupils moving from infant schools from the September following their seventh birthday. Pupils join in Year 3, and stay at the school for four years, leaving at the end of Year 6 when most pupils are aged 11. These four years form Key Stage 2 in the English education system. At the end of this time, most pupils will move to a secondary school.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a significant number of junior schools were abolished in favour of 8-12 or 9-13 middle schools, and while some of these remain open today the majority of them have been abolished in favour of a return to traditional 7-11 junior schools.

Vocational School

A vocational school (or trade school or career school), providing vocational education, is a school in which students are taught the skills needed to perform a particular job. Traditionally, vocational schools have not existed to further education in the sense of liberal arts, but rather to teach only job-specific skills, and as such have been better considered to be institutions devoted to training, not education. That purely vocational focus began changing in the 1990s "toward a broader preparation that develops the academic" and technical skills of students, as well as the vocational.

In United States of America

In the USA, vocational schools are usually considered post-secondary schools, but in some instances may take the place of the final years of high school. Nevertheless vocational schools are only two years of schooling. They may be public schools and as such are operated by a government, school district or other officially-sanctioned group, in which case they may or may not charge tuition. Most purely vocational schools are private schools; within this group they may be further subdivided into non-profit schools and proprietary schools, operated for the economic benefit of their owners. For a long time many proprietary vocational schools had a poor reputation for quality in many instances, and for over promising what the job prospects for their graduates would actually be; this has been largely corrected by more stringent regulation. The term career college is reserved for post-secondary for-profit institutions. Vocational schools have decreased severely in the United States by the replacement of offering alternative trade classes at specific schools.

Community colleges, in addition to offering the associates degree and core courses for transfer to four-year institutions, also offer vocational classes depending on the needs of the local community.

There is however an issue with vocational or "career" schools who have national accreditation instead of regional accreditation. Regionally accredited schools are predominantly academically oriented, non-profit institutions. Nationally accredited schools are predominantly for-profit and offer vocational, career or technical programs. Every college has the right to set standards and refuse to accept transfer credits. However, if a student has gone to a nationally accredited school it may be particularly difficult to transfer credits (or even credit for a degree earned) if he or she then applies to a regionally accredited college. Some regionally accredited colleges have general policies against accepting any credits from nationally accredited schools, others are reluctant to because regional schools feel that national schools academic standards are lower than their own or they are unfamiliar with the particular school. The student who is planning to transfer to a regionally accredited school after studying at a nationally accredited one should ensure that they will be able to transfer the credits before attending the nationally accredited school. There have been lawsuits regarding nationally accredited schools who led prospective students to believe that they would have no problem transferring their credits to regionally accredited schools, most notably Florida Metropolitan University and Crown College, Tacoma, Washington. The U.S. Department of Education has stated, however, that its criteria for recognition of accreditors "do not differentiate between types of accrediting agencies, so the recognition granted to all types of accrediting agencies — regional, institutional, specialized, and programmatic — is identical." However the same letter states that "the specific scope of recognition varies according to the type of agency recognized."

The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is the largest American national education association dedicated to the advancement of career and technical education or vocational education that prepares youth and adults for careers.

Many vocational schools have gone on to become some of the most prestigious universities in the world. The California Institute of Technology is one example.

In the United States, many trade schools trick students into signing up by overstating both their student job placement rate, and the starting salaries of those students who do get jobs. As a result, many graduates are disappointed to find out that they still don't have a job, or that they get a job, but it pays much less than what they had been told by the school.

In Asia

Technical Program
Technical specialty courses at vocational schools is a program that focuses on the application of science and technology to solve human problems. Practitioners professional technique called engineer (engineering degree).

Historically, many experts who believe in the ability of human engineering is embedded in a natural. It is characterized by the ability of early humans to make tools from stone tools. In other words, the technique was originally constituted by trial and error to create tools to facilitate human life. Over time, science began to flourish, and begin changing the way humans view of how nature works. The development of this science was the one who later changed the way engineering work until like this sekrang. People no longer so mengandalakan trial and error in creating or designing equipment, but rather as a basic priority of science in design.

Be Realistic About What to Expect

Vocational, trade, career, technical--Whatever you call the school, the objective of the curriculum is the same; to teach students a marketable trade not usually offered in traditional colleges and universities.
Vocational schools sometimes get a bad rap as not providing a "real" education. Vocational schools are geared towards students and career changers looking to acquire useful job skills. Vocational schools are not designed for the scholarly student interested in a career as a Classical Literature professor at an Ivy League university some day.
Vocational schools serve a number of very important sectors of the population.
High school grads that are not pursuing a traditional 4-year university degree, either due to interest of finances, but who want a career that requires knowledge and training.
Those in need of additional training to advance in their careers
Adults who are re-entering the workforce after some time and now need training in order to be competitive in the job market.
What Vocational School Is Not
Vocational school is not a training ground for someone trying to pursue a high level career in Business or Science. While most vocational schools are great at giving its students the best tools to make them competitive, the reality is that employers do consider what school you went to when you apply for certain jobs. If your dream is to be a Wall Street banker, then a business degree from schools like Harvard or Yale is what you'll need to get you in the door. If you're more interested in a good stable career such as a Pharmacy Technician, Computer Help Desk Specialist, Cosmetologist, Auto Mechanic or Electrician, then a vocational school is a much better option than a 4-year university.

Questions You Need Answers To Before Enrolling In A Vocational Program:

1. Is the school accredited?

Accreditation means that the school's curriculum has met high standards for education quality. The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges(ACCSC) is the most prestigious of such accrediting agencies, but they are not the only one. Some smaller regional schools may be accredited by a local agency, but that does not mean that the quality of education is not as good as larger schools that have been accredited by ACCSC. The important thing is that the school has allowed itself to be examined by an outside agency with regard to the quality of its programs.

2. What Is the Graduation Rate for Those Entering the Training Programs?

If this number is high, say 70% or more, this is a good sign that students find value in what they are learning, and that the school takes good care of its students. You do have to allow for some students dropping out due to personal or financial reasons that have nothing to do with the school at all, but a high dropout rate is reason for pause.

3. Does the School Offer Federal Financial Aid?

In addition to this being a means to help pay for your training, a school that receives federal funding has to be reviewed and approved by the federal government. Being eligible to offer federal financial aid is a good indication that the school is on the up and up.

4. Does The School Offer Job Placement Assistance Upon Program Completion?

Most vocational schools do offer placement assistance, especially those that receive federal financial aid. This is because one of the standards the school has to meet in order to qualify for aid is proof that a certain percentage of its students find gainful employment upon graduation.

5. What Percentage of Graduates Find Jobs in Their Field and What Is The Average Salary?

The numbers may be lower than normal during a significant downturn in the economy, but the school should be able to give you historic data so that you can get an idea of what to expect during economic prosperity.
Vocational school is a great alternative to traditional colleges in that they prepare you for an actual job. You just have to be smart about the type of program you pursue. Again, vocational schools may offer a wide range of programs, but only some make sense to pursue in that setting. Programs in Healthcare, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology and Massage Therapy are great choices. Business programs in Office Management or Bookkeeping are good, but programs in Finance are probably not the way to go.

How Planning can Help Lower Final Exam Stress Levels

In Australia, the trials for the NSW Higher School Certificate [and other State equivalents] have well and truly started with many a student facing the pressure [already] of their final secondary exams with nervous stomachs, bloodless lips and more than one prayer that they don't screw things up. The results of final exams determine eligibility to tertiary education, specific careers, and the freedom of choice. Emotionally also, it has its effects. Way past the nervous wait for exams to start, young adults can gain loads of confidence with a good mark or sink into self-defeating attitudes with a low one.
The thing to remember though is that this final grading is not quite the life-shaping event students imagine. Yes, a good mark will open up a few more doors, but these doors are not locked against everybody else. Choice is still there for those students who may not have achieved as well as hoped, but have the strength and determination to follow a flexible plan.
Start before the doors to the examination hall squeak open to let in the latest crop of trembling teenagers. Have a plan for which direction you'd like to head career-wise. Investigate the requirements for achieving this: university course, technical college course, apprenticeship, start-up employment. A university course will require lots of study and, often, classes in a similar field [eg. History, English and/or Language for an Arts Course] included in senior highschool studies can be an advantage.
Plan your attack. That is, time management. We all know studying is boring, especially when friends and good times beckon. However, a little time management [planning when and how long to study in advance] will allow you the leeway to do both. Balance is all-important. Forgoing all leisure pursuits and friends for your studies will soon get dry and dull. Plan for some going out time each week to freshen your mind and boost energy levels.
You have a vague to fair idea of what you want to do when you leave school, or, at least, you've identified an area of interest you wouldn't mind working in. You've figured out the path to achieving your long-term goal and what it takes to make your short-term goals. Now, work on a back-up plan.
There are alternative paths in every direction. If your marks aren't high enough for your chosen University course, can you go to a different college? Some technical colleges [we call them TAFE in Australia - Technical and Further Education], evening/private colleges offer courses that can be credited to university. Open University courses may be the start-up you need. Can you get a part-time job that is also related to your area of interest? Can you get a part-time job somewhere else and a volunteer position in your preferred industry?
Find out about redoing your final exams. Opportunities are there for those students willing to do the digging, and knowing you have a back-up might just help you face exams with a little less trepidation and a lot more confidence. The trial examinations at this time of year are there to help show students where they may need to pick up their studies in individual topics. They are a gauge of how well you are doing. If you make mistakes or don't get the mark you were expecting then now is the time to turn things around. This is your chance to pick yourself up, give yourself a stern talking too and a swift kick up the backside. Or to seek outside help in the form of tutoring or suitable "support" education [also known as self-learning].

Remember your long-term goals. HSC [final secondary school exam] is a short-term goal. Students [and their families] need to remember the big picture, plan early and not get caught up in the segments, or pixels, of school life. This way they can avoid a lot of the stress that builds up in the final year of high school. Knowing there is life after final exams and more than one path to follow will help settle the stomach and allow students to focus and concentrate on immediate goals, distant goals and what's really important - surviving secondary education with health and emotional intelligence firmly in place.

Exam Study Tips That High School and College Students Need to Know

The process of studying for an exam can feel very overwhelming if you don't have good study skills. Often times this is the difference between those students who do well on exams and those students who barely get by. Learning exam study tips and increasing your study speed are tools that you need to become a better student and test taker. This article will provide five study tips that will help you become a better student and provide the benefits of studying faster.

Developing your study routine all starts with where you study. The idea is to find a place that is free from distraction. When studying it is important to block all distractions to maximize your focus. After finding the best place to study that is free of distractions use that same study place everytime. When to study will make a huge difference in your success. You need to start studying at least one week prior to the exam date and for really challenging exams you may need to start a week and a half to two weeks prior.

Proper note taking is another skill that will lead to better test performance. When taking notes be sure to write down key points of a lecture or class. You have to listen and write key points down. Re-write any notes that need clarification or notes that do not make sense. reviewing your notes at the end of everyday will save time when test preparation times rolls around.
Another tip is to highlight your textbook instead of underlining. Studies have shown that high lighting is a more effective way of memorizing the material. Instead of high lighting just key words and terms focus on high lighting key phrases and important material. Of course this does require you the student to read the chapters.

Why Don't Asian Students Ask Questions in Class?

When I was about to embark on my first teaching assignment in Asia, a colleague with lots of overseas teaching experience there told me to take lots of lesson material. When I asked why, he said, "Because Asian students don't ask questions". In Canada, the US or other Western country it is normal to have a question and answer period at the end of a lesson. In Asia, forget it! Unless you have a class of students who have studied overseas, you are likely to enjoy the sound of silence.
Why don't they ask questions? Let me answer that from my experience teaching in Thailand. It holds true throughout Asia and may vary by degree. A young child in Thailand is taught that 'father knows best'. In school, the teacher knows best. Copy down what the teacher puts on the board. There is little transfer of learning. Change the wording on the exam and most of the students will probably not be able to answer the question.
Now, add to that the concept of 'face' which is prevalent throughout Asia though virtually unknown in North America and other Western countries. If a student asks a question in class, s/he leaves her/himself open to two possible 'loss of face' scenarios. By asking a question, it implies that a) either the teacher did not explain the topic well enough for the student to understand - thus opening up a loss of face situation for the teacher in front of the class, or b) the students was too dumb to have understood what the teacher was saying and so the student loses face amongst her/his classmates. While this may seem ridiculous to some and a little odd to others, believe me, it is a fact of life in Asia - at least in the oriental countries.
Since neither situation is a good one to initiate, it is better to avoid the problem by not asking the question - at least not in class. The student may opt to speak to the teacher outside the classroom after class or sometime later when there is no one else around. Loss of face is a serious issue in Asia, potentially even fatal. I kid you not. Teachers in Western countries who have newly-arrived Asian students should at the very least be aware of 'face'. These students become 'westernized' quickly though.
I think the situation is changing as more and more students are exposed to western thinking, teaching and culture but within Asia traditions die hard.
The 'face' issue goes hand-in-hand with a concept that I have termed 'The Cyborg Effect'. If you recall the Cyborg from Star Trek in their gigantic metal cube, these creatures functioned as individual bodies but one linked mind. In Thailand, students sit in pairs generally. Ask one student a question and you will not usually get an immediate response. The student will turn to her/his partner and confer. You will then receive a collective answer.
