In 1960, standing Djambi Academy of Commerce under the auspices of Higher Education Jajasan Djambi. This foundation was established on the initiative of community leaders and the Government of Jambi, the time and chaired by R. Sudarsono, who was then serving as Mayor of Jambi. Later in the year 1961, the Academy became Djambi Commerce in conjunction with the establishment of Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, both affiliated to the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia.

Armed with the existence of two such faculty, community leaders and Local Government of Jambi to fight the establishment of a university in Jambi through the Preparatory Committee for Establishment of the State University of Jambi. With the Ministerial Decree Number 105 Year 1962 PTIP dated August 15, 1962 Establishment of the Preparatory Committee was established, Jambi University. This committee is chaired by Colonel M.J. SINGEDEKANE, which at that time was the Governor of Jambi Province.
