SYARIF HIDAYATULLAH WAS ONE OF the Nine Wali [Islamic Saints] in Java. He was born on the Arabian Peninsula in 1448 and died in Cirebon in 1568. He was the son of Nyai Rara Santang (the daughter of Prabu Siliwangi from the Pajajaran Kingdom! and Syarif Abdullah (a high ranking officer in the Egyptian army). He had many nicknames, including Muhammad Nuruddin, Syaikh Nurullah, Sayyid Kamil, Maulana Syekh Makhdum Rahmatullah and Makhdum Jati. After his death he was given the name Sunan Gunung Jati.

IN AN EFFORT TO INTEGRATE general and religious sciences, Syarif Hidayatullah State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) Jakarta initiated the concept of IAIN with a Wider Mandate, which later led to the establishment of the State Islamic University. These efforts intensified under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra, M.A, with the opening of the Departments of Psychology, the Department of Teaching Mathematics under the Faculty of Tarbiya, the Department of Economics, and the Department of Shari'a Banking under the Faculty of Shari'a in the academic year of 1998/1999. In 200D, the Agribusiness and Information Technology study programs were operated in cooperation with the Bogor Institute of Agriculture [IPB], and the Management and Accounting study programs were run in cooperation with the Agency for the Study and Application of Technology [BPPT]. In 2001, the Faculty of Psychology and the Faculty of Dirasat Islamiya were officially opened. The latter was established in cooperation with AI-Azhar University, Egypt. Cooperation was established with the Islamic Development Bank [IDB] in order to build a modern campus. Syarif Hidayatullah State Institute of Islamic Studies [IAIN] Jakarta also established links with other institutions and universities such as: McGill University [CIDA], Leiden University [INIS], King Saud University (Riyadh], University of Indonesia, Muhammadiyah University (Jakarta). Ohio University, LBPP [Language and Professional Education Institute], BNI Bank and Bank Mu'amalat Indonesia.
On November 21, 2001, the Ministry of National Education [MONE] and Ministry of Religious Affairs [MORA] issued a Joint Decree, recommending that IAIN become a State Islamic University (UIN). In letter Number 08S796/MPN/2001 dated November 22.
2001, the Director General of Higher Education ac the Ministry of National Education [MONE] approved the operation of twelve study programs in natural and social sciences. The twelve study programs were: Information Technology, Information Systems, Accounting, Management, Agribusiness, Psychology, English Language and Literature, Library Sciences, Mathematics. Chemistry, Physics and Biology. These measures were also recommended by the State Minister for the Utilization of Government Apparatus and the Director General for Budgeting at the Ministry of Finance, in letter Number 02/M-PAN/I/2002 dated January 9, 2002, and letter Number S-49O/MK-2/2002 dated February 14, 2002 respectively. These recommendations contributed to the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 31 of 2002, dated May 20, 2002 concerning the transformation of IAIN Jakarta into UIN Jakarta.
Throughout the course of its history, IAIN Jakarta has been under the leadership of the following prominent figures: Prof. R.H.A. Soenarjo, S.H. (Rector), Prof. Dr. H. Mahmud Yunus (Dean of Tarbiya Faculty), Prof. H. Bustami A. Gani (Dean of Adab Faculty, 1960-1963), Prof. Drs. H. Soenardjo (Rector, 1963-1969), Prof. H. M. Toha Yahya Omar. MA. (Rector, 1970-1973), Prof. Dr. Harun Nasution (Rector, 1973-1984), Drs. H. Ahmad Syadali (Rector, 1984-1992), Prof. Dr. M. Quraish Shihab, MA. (Rector. 1992-1998), Prof. Dr. H. Anmad Sukardja, SH., MA. (Acting Rector, April-September, 1998), and Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra, MA. (Rector, 1998-2006).

The conversion of IAIN to UIN was made official with the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 31 of 2002, dated May 20. 2002. The Vice President, Hamzah Haz, conducted the inauguration on June 8, 2002, which coincided with the forty-fifth anniversary of IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and the start of construction of the faculty buildings, financed by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
