Math Tips - CAHSEE Prep

>> Sunday, August 1, 2010

The mathematics section of the California High School Exit Exam(CAHSEE) tests six major content areas(called content strands).

1. Number Sense
2. Data Analysis, Probability, and Statistics
3. Algebra Functions
4. Measurement and Geometry
5. Mathematical Reasoning
6. Algebra 1

These 6 areas make up the California academic content standards for grades 6 through 10. Since much of the material on the exam is disparate in nature it is important that students have a clear study plan when they begin preparing for the math portion of the CAHSEE. Here are some basic study tips that will help students maximize their study time.

1. Study one content strand at a time. Students should not skip around and study different content areas simultaneously. Instead, focus on one content strand at a time, master that area, and then proceed to the next content strand.

2. Students should study by solving practice CAHSEE questions. Students should never spend time reviewing concepts in text-books or looking at related class material. The CAHSEE doesn't test every standard covered in school and doesn't even test all aspects of the standards that do appear on the exam. Spending time solving practice problems ensures that students will not study superfluous material. In addition, as students master the practice problems for more and more standards their confidence will grow and this will improve their chances as a whole.

3. Make sure that sample problems are standard-specific. Many companies that offer CAHSEE prep material will use questions pulled from a generic test-bank as their practice material. These types of questions useless. The very best sample questions will be directly tied to a specific state content standard that is tested explicitly on the CAHSEE.
