For instance, with Garmin GPS, you first need to visit the Map and Chart Products page of the Garmin website and connect your GPS to your computer. For free map updates and downloads, you will need to have the serial number of the GPS device you have previously bought. If you haven't yet registered your device on the website, fill out the registration form available on the site so you can avail free map downloads. After successfully registering the serial number, you will be automatically be directed to the information page of available updates. If update is available, then follow the prompt of downloading the map update.
For Magellan GPS receivers, the steps are basically the same. Open the Magellan website and navigate your way to the Download and Content Manager Toolbox. Next, find the updates and map files that you need and follow the download prompt. Plug in your Magellan GPS receiver and install the updates on the device. Click "OK" on the download box to initiate the update. After the download is complete, disconnect your Magellan GPS from your computer and begin using your maps.
Apparently, there are websites that feature custom maps or maps created by GPS users like you. Such maps could have been developed using the custom map utilities of their GPS device. Files of these maps are shared for free in some websites. Free of cost map downloads are everywhere in the Internet. All you need to do is search them on Google or Yahoo, type in "free GPS map" and click on the "download" box. Just make sure that you get the right format and the right map you need to make traveling hassle-free.
