Airline Credit Cards Comparison

>> Wednesday, July 28, 2010

When you're looking to compare airline credit cards, I'm going to give you a simple checklist that's going to work for you. What you're going to find is that if you follow these questions, it's going to help you choose a better card that's going to work for you.
Are you loyal? Do you only fly one airline, such as Delta, Jet Blue, etc? If you only fly an airline like this, you're probably going to look into the airline based card. If you don't fly a loyal airline and you don't care, then I would recommend you look into a travel rewards card.
Do you want more than airlines? Many travel based cards today will give you more than just airline points. Do you want more than just airline rewards? Keep in mind that when you stretch out your rewards, you're going to get less in terms of points, and cash back.
Some airlines will give you tons of miles for every dollar that you spend with them, while others will make you wait a while to redeem your points. For example, let's say that you sign up for a loyal airline card. You will find that many will give you 3-6 miles per dollar spent with them, while another travel card may only give you 2 points for that same purchase. This is why you want to research the rewards system.
Let's now take a look at the difference between being loyal and getting a travel card...
Points - When you're loyal, you're going to get more points, when you spend with that airline. This will get you to an airline ticket a little faster.
Benefits - Airlines love when you're loyal. They may reward you with upgrades and more.
Discounts - Places like Jet Blue and more will allow you to get discounts with their partners. You can get discounts with car rental companies, and more.
There are so many cards out there and the industry changes all the time.
In the meantime, look into the Discover, as well as the Citi and AMEX brands of cards.
