The Day of the Final Exam

>> Monday, August 2, 2010

No, it's not the title of an obscure horror movie, although it may seem so to some students. Here is a checklist to make the day of your final exam go more smoothly. Of course, repeat as needed depending on how many classes you're taking.:-)

First of all, be well-prepared from a study standpoint. If you really know your stuff, final exam day jitters are much less troublesome.

Come with a battle plan for the type of exam you will be taking. Different types of exams require different approaches.

Multiple choice exam? If you truly don't know the answer, take a wild guess. Multiple choice exams give you the best chance of guessing and getting it right. Make sure that you answer all multiple choice questions. If you don't answer it, you have 0% chance of getting it right. If you make a guess on a four-choice question, at least you have a 25% chance of getting it right.

Short answer exam? Brief and precise answers in full sentences are the key. If you don't know the answer, make a brief and precise guess. Endless streams of BS in response to short answer questions just tend to dig the hole deeper and lessen your chances of getting any points for your attempt.

Essay exam? Some essay tests consist of responding at length to one question; others have multiple questions. When you're really lucky, the instructor will provide multiple essay questions and have you pick your favorites to answer. It is helpful to have some blank scratch paper on hand when answering essay questions, but make sure you have your instructor's approval first.

Obviously answers to essay questions will need to be developed more fully than short answer questions, but you can use the short answer approach to build the structure of your essay. Read the question carefully, use your scratch paper or the margin of your test to jot down your short answer response to each part of the question, and then develop explanatory material to flesh out the short answer responses. Using examples to illustrate that you understand the concepts is an excellent idea.

Just as with short answer questions, trying to BS your way through an essay question is usually not very productive. Believe it or not, your instructors were once college students themselves and they recognize that edge of desperation in answers that go on and on and on but never quite say anything. Concentrate on providing the best possible answers to the questions you know best.

A mix of question types? Look at the exam carefully before you start to see how the points are allocated among the questions. Generally, do the multiple choice questions as quickly yet carefully as you can, take on the short answer questions next, and save the bulk of your time and energy for the essay questions.

Don't pump up your adrenaline unnecessarily on exam day by forgetting essentials and having to rush out to get them at the last minute or hoping that someone else has an extra. You might even want to pack a special exam bag with supplies, just as if you were going on a trip.

Writing and erasing utensils and supplies such as pens, pencils, erasers, white out tape, and paper. Make sure you have multiple pens in case one runs out of ink. Multiple pencils are good so you can help out other classmates in need. Separate erasers really help make clean erasures on scantrons, and white out tape is the tidiest way to cover up errors in pen. If you are supplying your own paper for the exam, bring at least twice as much as you think you will need.

Scantrons. Oh boy. These are, in my experience, the biggest source of sitting down for the exam frenzy. Your instructor and/or syllabus will indicate what form you need well ahead of time. If you are unsure which form is needed, ask, preferably before the day of the final exam.

Do not assume that you can use whatever scantron form you happen to have on hand -- the scoring machines do not work that way at all. I have had students complete the exam on the inappropriate scantron and try to hand it in. I make them acquire the correct scantron and redo all of their answers onto it.

If you don't have the scantron, don't ask your instructor if you can just write your answers on the test form. Ask if a classmate has an extra you could have, or take yourself to the campus bookstore to buy one. Keep in mind that if you are taking a night class, the campus bookstore may not be open if you need a last minute scantron. Be ready well ahead of time, and buying a couple extras to possibly share with less-organized classmates is a kind thing to do.

Follow directions about how to fill out the scantrons carefully. Bubble the spaces in completely and erase very thoroughly, not only on your answers but for things like your name, student ID, test code, etc. Automated scoring systems are extremely sensitive and errors can occur if you don't mark the scantron appropriately.
Comfort items like water, gum, mints, pain relievers, and antacids. If you are allowed to chew gum, please do so politely.

Rushing in late or at the last minute just loads unnecessary stress onto yourself. Make sure your chair and writing surface aren't squeaky or wobbly. You would be surprised how loud and disruptive a device on vibrate can be in a quiet testing environment. I've seen whole classrooms of intensely concentrating students jump in annoyance when it happens. Engage in some relaxation techniques. Although you may be keyed up enough about the exam to fidget, twitch, joggle your legs under the table, etc., all those activities do feed more adrenaline into your system and make you more nervous. Relax - close your eyes - take deep breaths. Do a last minute scan over your notes and think positive thoughts. Even if other students around you are proclaiming gloom and doom, keep your energy focused quietly on the task to come.

The Importance of a Uniform Curriculum in Public Schools

It is no surprise to anyone that our public school system is gravely failing our children. Students aren't learning the basic skills needed in adulthood nor are they retaining the majority of the knowledge that they are given. Worst of all, teachers have to spend valuable time reviewing the previous year's work to ensure all pupils are at an equal knowledge base.
Each teacher has a school board approved curriculum to guide their lesson plan. While the curriculum states what concepts should be attained during a specific grade span, no concrete lessons are explain. For example the skill expectation in math may be "Uses properties or attributes of angles or sides to identify, describe, or distinguish among (specific shapes)." That seems to make sense, right? The way this usually works is the school decides to purchase books that they believe adequately covers the expected curriculum. The teachers design their individual lesson plans around the material in the textbook and the material they are encourage to cover by the administration. Each teacher designs a different lesson plan covering different material and maybe not getting around to some material at all or covering more than the required material.
Flash ahead to the next school year. Seven students from a class that didn't cover enough, ten students from a class that covered everything necessary and four students from a class that managed to go a little further are now in the same classroom. No matter how the teacher teaches there are going to be some issues - students left behind or students bored with endless review...nothing effective in this system.

There are additional problems when pupils go from several different elementary schools into a middle school and when students move out of the district, or worse, out of the state, finding a completely different set of standards and expectations.
What needs to happen is the United States needs to develop and adopt a Uniform National Curriculum clearly outlining what teachers need to teach at every grade level. A standard federal curriculum would keep every student attempting to achieve the highest standards possible. There would still be students that would learn faster or slower than others and each teacher has a different teaching style which can affect absorption and retention. But at least this would put every student in America on the same educational page.

The Social Pressures in Junior High School

People have varying insights about junior high school. Yes, it is the period of transition of elementary to high school. Normally, students enroll themselves in Junior high school for 7th and 8th grade, though often they are going to enroll for 6th grade there as well. It is not like the set up of elementary level where students attend classes in the same classroom and the same teacher for the entire day and the entire school year. In this level, students are face with more responsibilities - their subjects become harder and the homework load becomes heavier.
Indeed, junior high school is a tumultuous time for students. It is during this stage in which students are also entering their teenage years. This means they are not little kids anymore, but they are not grown ups either. This is the period of puberty and popularity as well as cliques that start to become a bigger issue. Many students struggle on dealing academics and the social pressure on campus. Being excluded or being singled out and picked on by other teens can take a big toll on junior high school students. As a matter of fact, bullying problems have increasingly caught the attention of the public and the media.
Junior high schools have been protested to shut down because of the violence of junior high social hierarchy and now advocate K to 8 schools where students attend the same institution from grades kindergarten to 8th grade. Advocates argue that this propose transition will help build camaraderie among students and thus, lessens the problem of peer aggression. This may proved to be true, but it would greatly depend on some factors such as the population of students, how much interaction the different grades have with each other etc. Take for example the situation wherein there is an extremely large student body; this could prevent kids from getting to know each other thus, bullying problems possibly arise.
However, despite the violence, many students continue to attend junior high school. Making the switch to K to 8 now would be too big of a move to make considering the short amount of time allotted. Some people say that kids will always be kids, and simply regrouping them would not change anything. Both students and teachers themselves should go hand in hand to address the issues of peer pressure and clique mentality but how to realize that solution remains unresolved.

MLB Important Dates

The Major League Baseball non-waiver deadline is July 31. After the All-Star break, teams will determine whether or not they are in position to contend for the post-season. Because of free agency and the lack of a salary cap in baseball, players in the final year of their contract are often put on the "trading block" by many of the non-playoff contending teams. Smaller market teams will not — or cannot afford to — pay their better veteran players high salaries, so they will attempt to trade them to a post-season contender, in exchange for some minor-league prospects or other players who might be able to help them in the future.

The MLB waiver deadline is August 31. There is much less activity between July 31 and August 31 because players must clear waivers.

Learning Indonesian Made Simple

>> Sunday, August 1, 2010

Another name for the Indonesian language is Bahasa Indonesia. From the name itself, you can tell that it is the official language of the country Indonesia. The country is made up of about 7,508 islands and it is considered the world's fourth most populous country in the world with a population of over 237 million. That is why you can never tell that the Malay-looking individual you are seated with on the bus is an Indonesian or has Indonesian descent.
The Indian culture has a strong influence on Indonesia. In fact if you're going to check it the word Indonesia came from Indus meaning India and nesos which means island in Greek. The Muslims had brought along Islam while different European traders fought over what they termed as "Spice Islands." It was only after the Dutch succumbed that the country earned their independence.
Being in a strategic location as to its neighboring countries Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Philippines, East Timor, and Australia, it is a great place for trading, and it has been the main foundation of its economy. The reason why the country now is defined by poverty is the sectarianism and extreme separatism of its social sectors. You see the Indonesian society is made up of several groups of religious, ethnic, and linguistic groups. One of the major factors that contribute to its unity despite several factions is its national language: the Indonesian language. That's how significant is the language to them. So if you are trying to impress a business partner prospect or is about to be wedded to an Indonesian, it would be a good and sure way to earn his trust and loyalty if you know his language.
The Indonesian language is also one of the most spoken languages in the world. Many people would still call the language Bahasa although the word itself only means language.
East Timor which used to be an annexed island of the country now declared Indonesian as one of the two working languages in the country, next to English. You would love to be in Indonesia as well if you are an environmentalist. The biodiversity life in Indonesia is rich and the second highest in the world. They owe it to the vast expanse of wilderness found in the country.
Now that you know how interesting it is to learn the Indonesian language, you can do so by using the Pimsleur audio language learning program which allows you to learn it at your own pace and without stern language trainers. You can get a copy from The Talking Book Store.

How to Get Perfect English Language Exam Scores Every Time Part 2

In this lesson you can take and techniques you can use to line yourself up to get a perfect score on your next English language exam. In part one of this article we looked at four key techniques for preparing to get a perfect score on English language exams. o Know the Specific Exam Topics
o Asking for and Attending Tutorials
o Preparing tutorial sheets for self-study
o Using Your Personal Learning Styles and Characteristics
In using your personal learning styles and characteristics in exam preparation, don't be shy about asking your teacher or tutor to help you prepare study aids that are specifically tailored for you such as:
o Flash cards and other visual aids
o Graphics, charts and tables
o Vocabulary lists, synonym listings and definitions
o Manipulatives and realia
o Digitally-based media and audio (MP3, wav, aud files, practice websites)
o Interactive activities (VHS or BETA cassettes, CDs, DVDs, games, etc.)
5. Establish a Regular Study / Review Schedule - and Stick to It
Start off by getting an accomplice or two to join or form a study and practice group with you for regular sessions. Have short but regular study breaks or sessions instead of fewer and longer ones. Use any and all methods and study aids at your disposal.
6. Relax, Unwind and De-Stress
If you've studied and practiced regularly, prepared well and kept up to date with class work and course requirements, you genuinely needn't worry. Before the exam, relax, unwind or de-stress yourself. The skills and material are in your brain. You put it "in there" numerous times in numerous ways. No amount of preparation will do you any good if you're" stiff as a board" or "tight as a drum" come exam time. So you need to relax beforehand. The day before the exam take a relaxation break and do whatever you need to de-stress yourself.
Keys to Relaxation
o Take a hot shower or soak in a warm, soothing bath
o Listen to soft music like ballads, romantic songs, classical or New Age instrumentals
o Watch a movie or video - comedies are especially good for unwinding; it's the gales of laughter (yours) you see ...
o Try Yoga or meditation - adding a few relaxation techniques to your test - taking repertoire can come in mighty handy.
Use The Five P's Principle
The five P's Principle: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance, will ensure you do your very best on an English language (or any other) exam. So apply these steps and techniques to line yourself up for a perfect score on your next exam. And if you score a 4.9 or 99 on the exam, well, nobody's perfect.

Math Tips - CAHSEE Prep

The mathematics section of the California High School Exit Exam(CAHSEE) tests six major content areas(called content strands).

1. Number Sense
2. Data Analysis, Probability, and Statistics
3. Algebra Functions
4. Measurement and Geometry
5. Mathematical Reasoning
6. Algebra 1

These 6 areas make up the California academic content standards for grades 6 through 10. Since much of the material on the exam is disparate in nature it is important that students have a clear study plan when they begin preparing for the math portion of the CAHSEE. Here are some basic study tips that will help students maximize their study time.

1. Study one content strand at a time. Students should not skip around and study different content areas simultaneously. Instead, focus on one content strand at a time, master that area, and then proceed to the next content strand.

2. Students should study by solving practice CAHSEE questions. Students should never spend time reviewing concepts in text-books or looking at related class material. The CAHSEE doesn't test every standard covered in school and doesn't even test all aspects of the standards that do appear on the exam. Spending time solving practice problems ensures that students will not study superfluous material. In addition, as students master the practice problems for more and more standards their confidence will grow and this will improve their chances as a whole.

3. Make sure that sample problems are standard-specific. Many companies that offer CAHSEE prep material will use questions pulled from a generic test-bank as their practice material. These types of questions useless. The very best sample questions will be directly tied to a specific state content standard that is tested explicitly on the CAHSEE.

If students follow these basic CAHSEE math tips they will improve their chances of passing the CAHSEE tremendously.
